Previous work put Asian nations atop a record of the planet’s worst marine plastic polluters, but the new analysis published last week in the journal Science Advances better accounts for plastic waste the U.S. exports across the globe in addition to illegal dumping in its borders.

While China remains the world’s biggest manufacturer of plastic, the investigators discover that in 2016 the U.S. has been the planet’s number one source of plastic waste, losing some 42 million metric tons to the international environment, reports Laura Parker for National Geographic. That’s almost double the tally of the following state on the list, India, that generated 26.3 metric tons of plastic waste that season. Americans used more plastic per capita in 2016 than residents of another nation on Earth at approximately 286 lbs per individual, per the research.

However, the 2016 figures stay sobering: only 9 per cent of U.S. plastic waste was recycled, which Mallos informs the Guardian is”very low”

“What the new study underscores is that we need to get a deal on source reduction in the home,” Mallos informs the Times. “That begins with removing unnecessary and debatable single-use plastics”
